The Ridgewood Music and Football Boosters held a Texas Holdem tournament in early May this year and Coshocton Rotary Club is planning to hold a tournament in late fall.
Basic procedure for Texas Holdem:
1) Prior to dealing the cards, two blinds (the Small Blind and the Big Blind) are placed in the pot by the two players to the immediate left of the dealer. The blinds are put in to start the action.
2) Everyone is dealt two down cards (hole cards). The action begins with the player to the left of the Big Blind folding, calling or raising. Action continues with all players making one of these decisions. This is the first betting round.
3) Upon completion of the first round of betting, the dealer then turns over three cards (community cards known as "The Flop"). This is the second betting round. Beginning with this round of betting (and throughout the remainder of the hand), the player to the left of the button acts first. A player may now check (not bet or fold) or bet if there is no betting in front of them. If there is betting and/or raising in front of them, they may Call, Raise, or Fold.
4) Following the completion of action on the "flop," the dealer turns over another card (known as "The Turn" or "Fourth Street"). This is the third round of betting. (In Limit Hold'em, the amount bet doubles on "The Turn".) The betting again starts with the player closest to the left of the button.
5) Following the completion of action on "the turn," the dealer turns over the last card (known as "The River" card or "Fifth Street"). This is the final round of betting.
6) Upon completion of the final round of betting, the best hand wins the pot.

"This is an easy way to make money, you make a lot more this way," Swails said.Although money comes easier this way, Swails said they enjoy doing candy sales and car washes more because they are good sellers and easy for the kids to do. It also gets the kids involved rather than the parents.
"The kids love to do car washes," she said.Many say poker is a game of chance or luck, which does have a part in it, but it is actually a game of skill. Skills that are important for Texas Holdem, according to include table selection, hand selection, reading opponents hands, opponent assessment and seat selection. The rest of the top skills include bluffing, check-raising, getting tells and pot odds calculations. The order of importance of these skills varies by game type.
Shane Pyle, past president of the Coshocton Rotary Club and current president of the Rotary Foundation, said the Coshocton club is planning to hold a tournament in late fall. But unlike other tournaments, theirs will be structured differently. They plan to hold qualifying rounds weeks in advance for the final tournament, and are allowing people to buy into the final round at a higher entry fee.
"We use the funds for projects to help our local community, all the money stays in Coshocton," Pyle said.
Pyle is in charge of the committee planning on holding the tournament. Rotary decided to hold the tournament, "because of its popularity, it's a national craze and pastime."
Poker has been a televised event on ESPN for more than a decade.
"We have had poker on our air since 1994 as a one- or two-part series," said Keri A. Potts from ESPN.
ESPN decided to bring in the production in 2003 to produce it as a live event. In 2004, the sports channel aired 22 one-hour shows of the World Series of Poker and it showed in more than 1.5 million viewing households. This year, they plan to air 32 one-hour shows in late July through November.
When it comes to poker as a fund-raising event, non-profit organizations do not need to obtain a license or permit, but can only hold two "festivals" a year.
Coshocton Towne Centre Association will also hold a Texas Holdem tournament to raise funds for the Christmas lighting on Main Street on Aug. 20, at Sacred Heart Gym. The Association will rent the equipment from River Club Poker.
Keith Harper, owner of River Club Poker, and has rented equipment for about a year.
"It's at its peak right now. It's something different, it's popular and on TV a lot," said Harper about Texas Holdem.
Harper rents out every piece and part of equipment needed for a tournament, and has equipment for up to 300 people in a single session. He rents equipment for about two tournaments a month, and three or four in the winter months.
"It has a competitive nature and people don't have to be an athlete to play. The demographic is larger," Harper said of the game.

Before the Flop: Starting Hands:

Position, Patience and Power are the key to winning in Texas Hold’em Poker. The most important decision you will make is choosing to play a starting hand. The biggest mistake a player makes is playing too many hands. Being aware of your Position in relationhip to the dealer is important in Texas Hold’em. You need a stronger hand to act from early position because you have more players acting after you who may raise or re-raise the pot. It is important that you are Patient and wait for Powerful starting hands to play from the correct position.
The player to the left of the big blind acts first before the flop. He along with the other two players to his left are in early position. The next three players are middle position and the ones after that are in late position.

The blinds act last before the flop and first after it. Here are some guidelines for stating hands that I recommend you play when you are starting out. They are fairly tight but will give you a good foundation to work with until you learn a little more about the game.

In Early position
Raise with A-A, K-K and A-Ks from any position. (s denotes suited cards) Call with A-K, A-Qs, K-Qs and Q-Q J-J, T-T and fold everything else.

In Middle position
Call with, 9-9, 8-8, A-Js, A-Ts, Q-Js, A-Q, K-Q

In Late position
Call with A-Xs, K-Ts, Q-Ts, J-Ts, A-J, A-T and small pairs. (note x denotes any card) It takes a stronger hand to call a raise than it does to make with one, If there is a raise before it is your turn to act you should fold. Why put in two bets with marginal hands?

Note: Many players will play any two suited cards from any position and they will play an Ace with any small kicker. These hands are losers in the long run and you should avoid getting into the habit of playing them. They are traps that will cost you money.

The Blinds
Once you post your blind the money no longer belongs to you. Many players feel they must defend their blinds by calling all raises even with marginal hands. Don’t waste additional money on marginal hands. Also, don’t automatically call with the small blind if you have nothing. Saving a half bet will pay for your next small blind.

The Flop
Deciding whether to continue playing after seeing the flop will be your second biggest decision. It can also be one of the most costly decisions if you continue after the flop with an inferior hand. It is said that the flop defines your hand. That is because after the flop your hand will be 71 percent complete. Where does this figure come from? Assuming you play your hand out to the end, it will consist of seven cards. After the flop you have seen five cards or 5/7 of the final hand, which is equal to 71 percent. With this much of your hand completed you should have enough information to determine whether to continue. Poker Author Shane Smith coined the phrase “Fit or Fold. If the flop does not fit your hand by giving you top pair, or better or a straight or flush draw, then you should fold if there is a bet in front of you. If you played a small pair from late position and you do not flop a third one to make a set you should throw the pair away if there is a bet.

The Turn
If you think you have the best hand after seeing the Turn card and are first to act, then go ahead and bet. Many players will try to get fancy and attempt to check raise in this position. If the other players also check, you have lost a bet or two. In low limit games the straight forward approach is usually the best as there are plenty of players who will call you. Make them pay. Why give them a free card if you don’t have to.
If another player raises on the turn and you hold only one pair you are more than likely beaten and should fold.
If you get to the Turn and you hold only two unsuited overcards (two cards higher that any cards on the board) with no flush or straight draws, then you should fold if there is a bet in front of you. Too much money is lost by players who hope to catch a miracle card on the river. The best hand you can make with two unsuited overcards is a pair which will probably lose anyways.

Many players will sit down in a Texas Hold’em Poker game and play as if they are wearing blinders. They see only their own two cards and the cards on the board. They give little or no regard to the other players at the table. This is not the way to play winning poker. Poker expert Mike Caro believes that you will make more money from your opponent’s mistakes than you will from your own fancy play. Therefore in order to be successful you will need to study and evaluate your opponents at the table. You can’t capitalize on mistakes if you are not aware of which players are making them.
When I first started playing I thought it would be difficult to read the other players as I would be sitting down in a game with strangers I had never played against. It’s true that in a low limit game you may not be able to determine the exact hand a player may have as they might be playing any two cards, but you can get a general idea about the types of hands they play.
You do this by paying attention at the table even when you are not involved in a hand. You always want to watch any time there is a showdown as this gives you valuable information about the types of stating hand your opponent is playing. In low limit games many players will play any two suited cards or single ace from any position. Knowing this can be valuable information. If a player plays any tow suited and three suited cards appear on the board you know you are probably up against a flush. Likewise if a player is known for playing any ace and an ace comes on the board, you can bail out and save money if you can’t beat a pair of aces.
You will find that most players will fall into several common categories based on what hands they play and how they play the hands at the table. Players can be loose or tight along with being passive or aggressive. You can mix and match these categories and break the majority of players down into four basic groups.

Loose-Passive
This group is also known as the calling station. They will play many hands but will not play them strongly. A calling station will cold-call two raises before the flop and stay until the river looking for that miracle draw. Even if it is clear that they are beaten, they will sometimes call just to keep you honest or to see what you had. There are some downsides to the calling station. They are the ones who will inflict the worst bad beats on you because of the cards they are playing and the fact they are staying to the end.

Loose-Aggressive
These types of player are the maniacs at the table. They crave action and want as much of it as possible. They will play many hands and will be betting and raising at every opportunity. This is the player you want to have sitting on your right so you can fold your weaker hands when they go into action. The problem with the maniac is that you never know what hand they are raising with. These players will cause the biggest fluctuation in your bankroll. They also will contribute to some of your biggest wins.

Tight- Passive
Players Tight-passive players are sometimes referred to as rocks. They play only premium starting hands, but they don't play them strongly, opting to check and call rather than bet raise or check-raise. When a rock makes a bet you can be sure he has a very strong hand. If you have been paying attention to the players in the game, you will be able to spot the rock at your table. You will lose to the rock if you do not have a strong hand. They hardly ever bluff, so when you are raised by one of these players you will save money by mucking your hand if you don't have anything near the nuts.

Tight-Aggressive
A tight aggressive player is a force to deal with. If this is not you, then it should be your roll model. This is the type of player you want to be. A tight aggressive player is selective about the hands they play but they play them very aggressively when they do play.

Use the Information
When you can evaluate the players at your table your game will improve if you use the information you discover at the table. It’s not as hard as it seems but you must pay attention or you will miss out on some profitable opportunities. Like other poker skills you must work on it to improve it.

How loose can you play Texas Hold'em Poker? When is it right to chase those guthots down, those backdoor flushes, and those overcards? To decide whether it is correct or not you have to understand odds.
To make money on plays that you are drawing to you need to first make sure that you think you'll have the best hand if you hit. Besides playing too many hands, one of the biggest mistakes low limit players make is drawing to hands that won't win even if they hit so try not to do that. Here is our example, you are in the big blind in a 10/20 game and an average player raises from early middle position and three people call. You call with T9off as well making it four callers total.The flop comes back:k - 9 - 2 (rainbow) ~ $80 PotHe bets, everyone calls. You can call $10 for $110 giving you about 1/11 odds right then. There are two 9's in the deck and three 10's giving you a total of 5/47 for the turn making it about 1/9.4 or 8.4:1. So IF you think your hand will win if you hit, you will make money by calling once. If you plan on calling till the river for it then your chances of hitting would be:5/47 and 5/46For figuring out odds for a draw that can hit on either the turn or the river (keyword either), you need to do something a little more complicated -- you figure out what the odds are of not hitting it and the subtracting that number by 1. Since 5 cards give us our hand, there must be 42 that don't. Then on the river if we haven't hit there must be 41 cards that don't make our hand.42/47 * 41/46This gives us .795, now subtract that from 1 to get the percentage of 20%.*****Flop to River % = 1 - [ ((47 - Outs) / 47) * ((46 - Outs) / 46) ]
That means to make your call profit you'll need to get better then 1/5, 4:1 return on your money for the WHOLE hand, not just that specific card (turn or river). That's where implied odds come in. So that means that if the total cost till the river for you was $70: $20 preflop, $10 flop, $20 turn, $20 river you'll have to make back something like $280.If you figure in that you won't be good a lot of the time even when you do hit, it doesn't make it a good play to go till the river. It would be ok to call once on the flop to see if you can hit on the turn card but you need to be careful to not give too much back if the person does still have you beat with a better hand.So the bottom line is draw to a winning hand and don't be a sucker and try to draw on hands in small pots. Also remember that if you have a hand like the above and he has a hand like AK then you not only have a weaker hand but a weaker draw. You have the same odds to catch your T as he does his A. That makes your play even worse if you chase it down.
Let's do one more example so you have a good understanding of odds and implied odds.
You hold 89s in a $3/6 game on the dealer button. One person raises and 5 people call including you. That means there is ~$36 in the pot already.
The flop comes back: Js 7h 4h.
You have a gutshot to the nuts. Is it worth calling? The first person bets and two other people call before you. That means there is already $36 + $9 = $45 in the pot. A gutshot straight has 4 outs (all the Ts) out of 47 cards for the turn and then 4/46 for the river. To hit it on the turn you'll have a 1/11 chance. To call $3 for the pot being $45 you'll definitely have the odds since you'll also make more on later betting rounds if you hit.
The turn brings: Js 7h 4h 6s
Now you have a really nice draw since any T or 5 gives you the nuts (8 outs) and any spade gives you the flush (9 outs). Two of the spades double for straight cards. That means for you to improve you have 15/46 which is about a 33% chance of hitting. If the person bets and even raises in front of you, you'll still have the odds to call it since even $12 compared to the $60 pot gives you awesome odds!
Learning to calculate pot odds and implied odds is very important. It doesn't have to be exact but just a general idea if it is worth it or not is good enough. You'll rarely be in situations where it is just barely off the odds. Those don't cost much. What costs a lot is if you rountinely make the wrong decision when to draw. Also understand that what is currently in the pot isn't all that matters in calculating odds, what matters is the amount of money that is in the pot now plus what will be made if you hit your hand...future bets. This is what implied odds is all about.
